Facebook blocking solves all problems.
No electronic connection? No problem.
As powerful as it is, blocking just doesn’t quite cut it for me.
Instead of “blocking” someone on Facebook, I believe you should be able to “banish” them.
Primarily, the reason one person blocks another on Facebook following a dispute is to give themselves an illusion of power and an illusion of importance. They lack both, either in their lives, or in the context of the dispute at hand, and by doing so, they boost their self-esteem, at least for a little while.
If so, why not let them use a verb that denotes power?
The verb “banish” works perfectly because it signifies that its agent has power over the patient/theme. “The King banished the disobedient knight from his kingdom.” That King, the agent, had power over the knight, the patient/theme.
‘
Which sounds better?
“Patty blocked Tom from seeing her profile.”
“Patty banished Tom from her profile.”
Certain temporal adverbs work better with ‘banish’. Take,
“I blocked her forever.”
Oh. Okay.
“I banished her forever.”
Damn straight. Show that bitch who’s boss.
How about, “I blocked her for the rest of my life” versus “I banished her for the rest of my life”? Which one holds more weight? Which one shows that you mean business with your e-smackdown?
‘Banish’ is permanent. ‘Block’ is not. You can unblock someone, but you can never ‘unbanish’ anyone. The word ‘unbanish’ does not exist. The word ‘unblock’ does.
Block is a word derived from the French verb ‘bloquer’, first recorded in the meaning of ‘obstructing’ someone’s path in 1425. English has seen fit to put the prefix ‘un’ on it, thus negating its meaning, and sapping it of its power.
“Hey, it’s no big deal. I’ll go ahead and unblock you.”
Banish, of late Latin origin, has no power-draining prefixes.
“You are banished. Now go to hell.”
I rest my case.

lol, I see your point. But I have a different response to this at my blog: http://elladatort.wordpress.com/
facebook is a friend networking site, the purpose of it is to make friends. if you don’t get along them, then either block (exile is a better word) for the time you are upset, or altogether de-friend them. save the drama for myspace.
